Including
low and moderate income (LMI) beneficiaries
in a $60-B Community Benefits Plan
Republican
civil rights advocate Arthur Allen Fletcher, known as the father of the
affirmative action enforcement movement, endowed America’s future with a vision
for inclusion. How much have we learned and
how much more do we need to know TODAY about #EconomicInclusion?

AMWS, October
23, 2019, Atlanta -- If your bank
announced a $60
billion Community Benefits Plan, you may want to know how that promise
impacts your Money-n-the-Bank. What bank employee best carries out the spirit
of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)?
Youth
Achievers USA Institute is calling on its CRA colleagues to join forces in
recognizing bank employees who best demonstrate individual and collective
commitment to grassroots community reinvestment. Each nominating partner matches a YouthUSA
commitment to award $10,000 on behalf of the Community Banker of the Year.
Earlier this
year, advocates met regulators and bank executives in Federal Reserve Bank
regions with a common vision “to help children in low income
American communities grow up less poor.”
The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), enacted in 1977, requires the
Federal Reserve and other federal banking regulators to encourage financial
institutions to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they do
business, including low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods.
In 2019,
YouthUSA sponsored Learning Journeys to communities in Georgia, Florida,
Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Americans from low- and moderate income communities were asked, “If you
learned you are a beneficiary in a $100-Million Trust, what would be your next
move?”
YouthUSA followed
up with feedback to bankers after learning of an emerging new brand for an
envision sixth largest bank in the United States. We asked our bankers a simple question, “What’s a Truist?”
Who did we
ask? Today, we’re naming names--expecting
a substantive response to the question from every bank employee we asked. The nominees will engage low - and moderate -
income communities in managing a $10,000 grassroots community reinvestment
contract.
The total
number of $10,000 contracts are impacted by matching grants from banks,
foundations and CRA advocates.
